Zurich, Switzerland

A travel day for us with a train trip from Paris to Zurich.  We'll contact you next from Switzerland.

The train ride was very comfortable and we arrived in Zurich mid-afternoon.
We spent the afternoon & evening in the OLD section of Zurich - which is really charming & quite beautiful.  The last time we were in Zurich (2005) we stayed in the new section - in the heart of the financial district, which is much like any big city in the US.
We were so pleased to see this other side of Zurich...reminded us of Lucerne, however, with trolley cars.  We would definitely enjoy visiting here again, for a longer period - next time!

The river Limmat runs through the old section of Zurich.
The photos attached are three major sites on the banks of this river, including:

St. Peter's, the oldest church in Zürich, which has its origins going back to pre-900.  The church is adorned with the largest clock face in Europe. Its circumference measures 28.5 feet.

The Fraumunster abbey of Zurich was founded in 853.  The choir of the abbey includes 5 large stained glass windows designed by artist Marc Chagall, including the attached photo (from a website).

The Grossmunster and its twin towers are regarded as one of the most recognizable landmarks of the Zurich skyline.  This Romanesque-style church dates back to around 1220 AD.

We had a delicious dinner watching the sunset over the sites above on the Limmat.

Lake Como, Italy May 6 - May 9, 2011 ..... 5/6 We are now "back on land" - (if you have forgotten, Venice lies on a group of marshy islands in the Adriatic Sea, about four miles from the mainland of Italy) - having left Venice BY CAR!!! We picked up our rental car & drove from Venice to Lake Como….about 190 miles in about 3 hours.   The scenery included some wine country. We had a GPS system that was very good, with a navigator that gave precise directions with an English accent.   Tom actually did a fine job….so we should enjoy having wheels once again. We are staying in a lovely villa turned hotel – the Grand Hotel Imperiale – located at the southern end of the Lake Como and 7 miles from the town of Como. Paris, France April 21 - April 26, 2011..... 4/21 Bon jour from Paris. OK - that's about all the French I know. We had a terrific train ride from London to Paris on the "Chunnel"....the total time was 2.5 hours - with only a very short time in tunnels (under the Channel).   The transportation system in London is really marvelous....clean, efficient, and always on time. Now we will see how it is in Paris!! We checked in to the Hotel Relais Bosquet at 19, Rue du Champ de Mars...only about a 10 minute walk to the Eiffel Tower.   It is located on a side street with many quaint cafes, patisseries, cheese and wine shops, open-air market with lots of fresh fruits & vegetables, flower shops, gift shops, etc.   We had a nice leisurely dinner at a cafe, eating outside, since it is ANOTHER gorgeous day...temps in the 70's with lots of sun!!   Then we stopped at a "Chocolat Boutique" and picked up an assortment of macaroons (pistacchio, chocolate-...
